Gem lover Mihaela’s story of wearable art

Posted by Jo Beckett on

I met the lovely Mihaela a few years ago when she asked me to custom make a ring for her ruby. I have had the pleasure of creating more bespoke pieces for her since, and today I wanted to share the latest creations I made for her. These came about when I launched my Gem Collection and Mihaela spied a couple of stones she just couldn’t resist!

She tells the story of her most recent one-of-a-kind pieces, created in Mediterranean hues.

'As soon as I discovered Jo's jewellery in one of her stockists, I fell in love with her designs. I’ve always loved jewellery with gemstones. There’s something particularly magical about the combination of these mini sculptural forms that feature specially cut gems.  To me it’s wearable art.

Over time I’ve acquired some of Jo’s one-of-a-kind pieces and I treasure them. I was recently looking for gems in aqua hues that would match my kite shaped aquamarine earrings, when I came across Jo’s special Gemstone Collection.

As soon as I saw the triangle shaped aquamarine in Jo’s collection I was immediately drawn to it.

On speaking with Jo, she suggested we set it in her Triangle Wave design which would complement the triangular shaped gem perfectly. The Triangle Wave ring has the added bonus of stacking particularly well, I love the idea that I could add to it and create a stack in the future.

I also spotted a stunning Kite shaped tourmaline in Jo’s Gemstone Collection, its beautiful teal blue colour reminds me of the colours of the Mediterranean sea.

I thought that would work perfectly set in Jo’s new Hex necklace designs that I had my eye on.

Jo made the whole process of creating both the Triangle Wave ring and the Hex necklace smooth and enjoyable right from the initial conversation, to the exchanging of ideas to agreeing the final designs.  She has a very calm demeanour, answering all my queries and explaining everything super clearly.

I am absolutely thrilled with the result, especially as my new jewels were ready just on time for my birthday. Wearing them makes me feel good, I describe it as ‘elegance through simplicity’.’

You can find out more about another of Mihaela’s pieces - The tropical sunset tourmaline ring (pictured top) here. This was a collaboration piece with Jo's friend, the stone cutter and goldsmith Mark Nuell - who cut the beautiful checkerboard stone.
